Local Knowledge

A Collection of Neighborhoods, Not Just One

Northside isn’t a single neighborhood with fixed borders — it’s a loosely bounded collection of late-19th and early-20th-century streetcar suburbs north of downtown, including Ginter Park, Highland Park, Barton Heights, Sherwood Park, and Bellevue. Most of this development traces back to industrialist Lewis Ginter, who began buying land north of the city in 1895, at a time when Northside’s flat terrain made streetcar lines cheap to build and the area an easy sell as a suburban retreat from downtown.

If your specific neighborhood is Bellevue, see our dedicated Bellevue gutter cleaning page for that level of detail. This page covers the rest of Northside’s streetcar suburbs. See our main gutter cleaning service page for what every visit includes.

A Genuinely Remarkable Fact

Ginter Park: Where Three Virginia Governors Lived

Ginter Park has an oddly specific claim to fame: every Richmond resident ever elected Governor of Virginia — John Garland Pollard, L. Douglas Wilder, and Tim Kaine — lived in this one neighborhood. Pollard was even Ginter Park’s own first and only mayor before the town was absorbed into the city. The neighborhood’s showplace, Chamberlayne Avenue, has a tree-lined median strip that was deliberately built to echo Monument Avenue, just with half-acre lots and a more eclectic mix of architecture.

Ginter Park’s historic district covers roughly 290 acres of Colonial Revival and builder’s vernacular homes, and it’s home to Union Presbyterian Seminary. That’s a lot of mature tree canopy and a lot of century-old gutter systems in one area.

More of Northside’s Streetcar Suburbs

Highland Park, Barton Heights & Sherwood Park

Highland Park’s Queen Anne Homes

Developed from a 150-acre subdivision purchased in 1890, Highland Park holds Richmond’s largest remaining stock of Queen Anne style homes — genuinely ornate Victorian-era architecture with the decorative trim that comes with it.

Barton Heights’ Early Streetcar Roots

Among Richmond’s very first streetcar neighborhoods, developed from land James Barton acquired in 1889, with a housing stock spanning multiple eras of subsequent infill.

Sherwood Park’s Olmsted Connection

Originally laid out in 1892 by the firm of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, though his curved-street design was never fully realized. Most of what stands today was built from the late 1920s through the 1940s and 50s.

A Genuine Mix of Architecture

Across all of Northside: Craftsman bungalows, Romanesque Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and American Foursquare styles, often on the same block.

What It Costs

Gutter Cleaning Cost for Northside Homes

Most Northside homes are single or two-story, putting a standard cleaning in the $150–$400 range depending on height and gutter footage — see our full gutter cleaning cost guide for the complete breakdown. Larger Ginter Park homes with more architectural detail, or Queen Anne homes in Highland Park with extensive trim, often land toward the higher end.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Gutter Cleaning in Northside

Is Bellevue part of Northside, or its own thing?

Bellevue is technically part of the broader Northside area, but it’s distinct enough that we cover it on its own dedicated page. See our Bellevue gutter cleaning page if that’s your specific neighborhood.

Do you work on Highland Park’s Queen Anne homes specifically?

Yes, regularly. These homes often have significant decorative trim that needs hand-cleaning rather than aggressive methods.

What about Ginter Park’s larger, older homes?

Yes, we work throughout Ginter Park, including the larger Colonial Revival homes near Chamberlayne Avenue with longer gutter runs.

Do you cover Barton Heights and Sherwood Park too?

Yes, our Northside coverage extends across all of these streetcar suburbs, not just the more well-known ones.

How often do Northside homes typically need gutter cleaning?

Twice a year is the standard baseline given the area’s mature oak and maple tree canopy, similar to other established Richmond neighborhoods of this age.
