FAQ

Gutter Cleaning FAQs — Richmond, VA

Every question we actually get asked, organized by topic. If yours isn’t here, call us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

We put this page together because the same handful of questions come up on nearly every call — what it costs, how often gutters actually need cleaning here, whether we cover a specific neighborhood, and what happens if a repair turns up mid-job. Rather than make you call to find out, here’s the honest answer to all of it.

These answers reflect how we actually run jobs in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and the surrounding counties — not a generic script. If you want more detail on any topic, each section links to the full page on it, and our full range of services covers everything from routine cleaning to storm response.

Pricing & Estimates

See our full pricing guide for the complete breakdown by home height.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Richmond, VA?

Single-story homes typically run $150–$250, two-story homes run $200–$400, and three-story or steep/complex rooflines run $350–$550 or more. Gutter guard removal and reinstallation is priced separately, usually $200–$450.

Are your estimates free?

Yes. Call (804) 460-6786 and we’ll give you a price range over the phone based on your home’s height and gutter footage, then confirm the exact price on-site before any work starts.

Does the price change once you’re actually on-site?

Only if the scope changes — for example, if we find gutter guards that need to be removed and reinstalled, or repair work you didn’t know about. We show you and get your approval before anything beyond the original quote happens.

Is gutter repair included in the cleaning price?

Minor issues spotted during a cleaning, like a loose hanger, are often fixed on the spot. Larger repair work is quoted separately once we can see the extent of it.

Is there a minimum charge for small properties?

Very small properties or partial jobs may carry a minimum service charge rather than a per-foot rate that works out to almost nothing. Ask about this specifically when you call for your quote.

Do you require a deposit before starting work?

Most residential jobs are paid on completion once you’ve confirmed the work is done. Call to confirm payment details for your specific job, especially for larger commercial or multi-building properties.

Scheduling & Frequency

How often should I get my gutters cleaned in Richmond?

Twice a year is the baseline — once in late spring after pollen and seed drop, and once in late fall after the leaves are down. Homes under heavy pine coverage in Short Pump, West End, or parts of Glen Allen often need three to four cleanings a year.

Do you offer one-time cleanings, or only recurring service?

Both. Plenty of customers start with a one-time cleaning, especially if it’s been a few years since the last service. Most move to a twice-a-year schedule after that.

How long does a typical cleaning take?

Under an hour for most single-story homes. Two-story and multi-story homes, or gutters with heavy buildup, take longer depending on footage and condition.

Do I need to be home during the appointment?

Not necessarily, as long as we have safe access to the exterior of your home. If you’d like to see the photo documentation and walkthrough in person, being home for the end of the job works well.

What’s Actually Included

See our full step-by-step process for the complete breakdown.

What’s actually included in a gutter cleaning?

Hand-clearing debris from every gutter section, flushing and testing each downspout to confirm it actually drains, an inspection for loose hangers or early damage, and full debris haul-away. Photo documentation is available on every job.

Do you clean the outside of the gutters, or just the inside?

Our standard service focuses on clearing the interior and confirming drainage, which is where clogs actually cause damage. If you’re asking specifically about exterior brightening or staining, call to check current availability.

What happens to the debris you remove?

Everything that comes out of your gutters leaves the property with us. We don’t blow it into your yard or a neighbor’s lawn.

Will you tell me if I don’t actually need a cleaning yet?

Yes. If it’s been under six months since your last cleaning and there’s no visible overflow or storm damage, we’ll say so on the phone rather than book a job you don’t need.

Safety, Equipment & Property Protection

Do you work from a ladder, or do you walk on my roof?

Cleaning is done from a ladder with stabilizers, and on steep or multi-story homes, a harness and roof-anchor for safety. We keep time spent walking directly on the roof surface to a minimum to avoid stressing shingles.

What equipment do you use to clean gutters?

Ladders, stabilizers, and hand tools to clear debris by hand. We don’t rely on pressure washers or leaf blowers as the primary cleaning method — they don’t fully clear compacted debris like matted pine needles the way hand-clearing does.

Will your team protect my landscaping, siding, or windows while working?

Yes, we work carefully around landscaping, siding, and windows, and debris is hauled away rather than left in your yard or dropped carelessly during removal.

Do you clean gutters on garages, porches, or other structures on my property?

Yes, if there are gutters on a garage, porch, or another structure, let us know when scheduling so the quote covers the full job accurately.

Can gutters be cleaned safely in the rain or right after a storm?

Light rain usually doesn’t stop a scheduled cleaning, but heavy rain, high wind, or lightning does — ladder work isn’t safe in those conditions, so we’ll reschedule rather than rush a job unsafely.

Preparing for Your Appointment

How do I know if my gutters actually need cleaning right now?

The clearest signs: water pouring over the edge during rain instead of draining through the downspout, visible plants or weeds growing out of the gutter, sagging or pulled-away sections, water stains or streaking on siding below the gutter line, birds or pest activity around the roofline, and a visible “waterfall” off one section while the rest of the run stays dry. Seeing two or more of these means it’s past due, not just due.

What should I do to prepare before your team arrives?

Nothing major. Just make sure we have clear access to your exterior walls and any gated areas are unlocked. We bring our own ladders and equipment.

Do I need to move my car or clear anything from my yard?

Only if a vehicle or object is directly blocking ladder access to a specific section of gutter. Otherwise, no prep is needed on your end.

What happens if it’s raining or icy on my scheduled day?

We’ll call to reschedule if weather makes ladder work unsafe, rather than risk a rushed job in unsafe conditions.

Service Area

See our full service area page for every neighborhood we cover.

What areas of Richmond do you serve?

The Fan District, Church Hill, Museum District, Bellevue, Northside, Southside and Manchester, Bon Air, Stratford Hills, West End and Tuckahoe, Short Pump, Glen Allen, Midlothian, and Mechanicsville, along with the City of Richmond generally.

Do you serve Henrico, Chesterfield, or Hanover County?

Yes, all three, in addition to the City of Richmond itself.

What if my neighborhood isn’t listed?

Call us anyway. We cover most of the Richmond metro, including areas just outside our main service list, and we’ll tell you honestly if a property is outside our range.

Can you provide proof of insurance for HOA or property management requirements?

Yes, call ahead of your scheduled service and we can provide proof of insurance for HOA or property management documentation requirements.

Historic & Older Homes

See our full historic home gutter cleaning page for more.

Do you work on historic homes in Church Hill or the Fan District?

Yes, regularly. We hand-clean older gutter systems and steep hillside rooflines without altering the historic roofline, and we’re careful around decorative cornice work common on Victorian rowhouses in these neighborhoods.

Can cleaning damage an older gutter system?

It can, if it’s done carelessly — older systems are often more fragile than modern seamless gutters. That’s why we hand-clean rather than pressure-wash or aggressively scrape, and we flag any section that looks too fragile to clean without repair first.

Gutter Guards

See our full gutter guard installation page for pricing and details.

Do you install gutter guards?

Yes. Guards are sized and recommended based on what’s actually dropping on your roof — pine needle coverage in Short Pump or Glen Allen calls for a different guard than broadleaf debris in the Fan District.

Are gutter guards worth it in Richmond?

They help significantly with broadleaf debris like oak and sweetgum leaves. They’re less effective against loblolly pine needles and catkins, which slip through most standard mesh. Whether they’re worth it depends on your specific tree coverage — we’ll give you an honest read rather than a blanket yes.

thunderstorm

Storms & Emergencies

Do you offer emergency service after a storm?

Yes. After a nor’easter or a heavy summer thunderstorm, call us directly rather than booking a standard appointment online — storm response gets prioritized differently than routine scheduling.

Should I wait until after storm season to get gutters cleaned?

No — going into nor’easter season (August through October) with clogged gutters is exactly when overflow and foundation risk are highest. A cleaning before the season starts is more useful than one after.

Licensing & Trust

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We’re licensed and insured to work in Richmond, VA and the surrounding counties, so you’re covered if anything happens on your property while we’re on the job.

Are you a local company, or part of a national franchise?

We’re locally run and only work in the Richmond, VA metro. We’re not a national franchise dispatching whoever’s available that week from a call center in another state.

Do you provide proof of what was cleared from my gutters?

Yes, photo documentation is available on request for every job, showing exactly what came out of your gutters before we haul it away.

Do your technicians carry ID or identify themselves clearly?

Yes. If you’d like to confirm who’s arriving before you open a gate or unlock access, mention that when you book and we’ll make sure that’s covered.

Results & Satisfaction

What if I’m not satisfied with the cleaning?

Call us and tell us specifically what’s wrong. We’ll come back and address it rather than consider the job closed if something wasn’t done right.

Do you guarantee your work?

We stand behind the work we do on the day we do it. We don’t offer a written warranty beyond that, since gutter performance afterward also depends on factors outside our control, like new debris after a storm.

Will you tell me if you notice other damage while you’re up there?

Yes. We’ll point out anything visibly concerning we notice, like damaged shingles or a soft fascia board, since we’re already up there. A full roof inspection is outside our scope — for that, we’d recommend a roofing specialist.

Still Have a Question?

Call us directly and we’ll give you a straight answer, no matter which category it falls under.
