Local Knowledge

From Mountain Road Crossing to Modern Suburb

Glen Allen was originally known as Mountain Road Crossing when rail service arrived in 1836. The name changed to honor the homestead of Mrs. Benjamin Allen, a local landowner whose property gave the growing settlement its identity. Its most colorful early resident was Captain John Cussons, an English-born Confederate scout who settled here after the Civil War, built a successful printing business, and later opened a resort hotel called Forest Lodge right next to the railroad tracks.

Henrico County still marks the spot with a historical sign at Mountain Road and Hamilton Road. See our main gutter cleaning service page for what every visit includes, wherever in Glen Allen your home sits.

A Genuinely Old Road

Mountain Road: Older Than the Suburb Around It

Mountain Road itself predates Glen Allen by centuries — it started as an Indian trail and became a well-known route through the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The Marquis de Lafayette reportedly traveled this road on his way to Yorktown, and during the Civil War, Union General Philip Sheridan led his cavalry down Mountain Road to what was then called Allen’s Crossing, where his men tore up the railroad tracks. That’s a lot of American history running through what’s now a Henrico County commuter route.

Older Homes Near the Historic Core

Some architecture from Glen Allen’s 19th and early 20th century past still stands near the original Mountain Road crossing, giving these pockets a genuinely different feel — and different gutter needs — than the surrounding subdivisions.

Newer Suburban Subdivisions

Most of Glen Allen’s growth has come in recent decades, with newer construction, modern gutter systems, and larger subdivisions filling in the formerly rural farmland and plantation land that once dominated the area.

Glen Allen sits close to Short Pump and shares some of its loblolly pine coverage in the more wooded sections. See our Short Pump gutter cleaning page if that describes your specific property.
